Why drain fields struggle in this county
Much of Catawba County has clay-influenced soils that drain slowly compared with sandy regions. Conventional drain fields (also called leach fields or soil treatment areas) need unsaturated soil to finish treating effluent. When soils stay wet—or when solids have clogged the biomat and laterals—effluent has nowhere to go. You see soggy ground, odors, lush wet strips of grass, or sewage returning to the house.
Heavy rainfall around Hickory and the Newton–Conover corridor can make a marginal field look catastrophic for a few days. That is why we evaluate tank condition and recent pumping history before declaring the field dead.
